Asset Class

Also known as: asset class, asset classes, investment category

A category of assets that share similar economics, risk patterns, valuation methods, and ownership characteristics.

Definition

An asset class is a grouping used to compare assets that behave similarly enough to be analyzed under a common framework. Real estate, private businesses, websites, domains, data assets, and intellectual property can each have distinct return drivers and leverage mechanisms.

Example

A rental property and an SEO website can both produce income, but they belong to different asset classes because their risks, scalability, liquidity, and maintenance profiles differ.

Important Context

Asset classes are analytical tools, not fixed laws of nature. New categories can become useful when a group of assets starts showing repeatable economics and repeatable transfer markets.
